Breakfast on the Water: Anna’s On the Lake, Kenosha

My son lives in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and his place is within walking distance of Anna’s On the Lake. So on a Sunday morning visit, the plan was easy. What better place to have coffee and a breakfast sandwich on the weekend than here?

Coffee with a View

Anna’s is a specialty coffee shop and kitchen at 5159 6th Ave, with a patio that looks out over the waterway leading to Lake Michigan. We grabbed a table outside on a bright, sunny morning: blue sky, sun sparkling off the water, and a hot coffee in hand. It’s hard to beat.

I didn’t think I was that old, but apparently I’m old enough to get to a place like Anna’s earlier than most. When Margaret and I arrived, a group of older folks was already settled in with their coffee, talking about local goings-on. I like to listen in on what other people are saying. Yeah, I’m a creep. But by the time we left, around 9 or 9:30, the line was clear out the door. It was crazy. I don’t think it was tourists, either. My guess is it was the younger crowd from the condos and high-rises in downtown Kenosha, rolling out of bed a little later than us old folks.

Cappuccino and Cocoa

My cappuccino was delicious. I always order mine with coconut milk and a little cinnamon, kind of a callback to the Cuban and Latin-style coffee I love. The coconut milk gives it a certain natural sweetness. Margaret doesn’t drink coffee at all, so she always goes for a hot cocoa.

Breakfast Sandwiches

We each went with a breakfast sandwich and traded bites across the table. Margaret got the bagel sandwich, with egg and melty cheese and a crispy, lacy layer of griddled cheese spilling out the sides. That crunchy cheese edge is the best part. I went with a classic sausage, egg, and cheese on an English muffin, with fluffy scrambled eggs piled high.

I must be on a whole bagel roll lately, because I think Margaret’s bagel sandwich was the more filling of the two. Either way, I didn’t need to eat again for a good chunk of the day, even after the mile walk back to our son’s house.

Simple, satisfying, and served with one of the best views in town. If you’re in Kenosha on a weekend morning, this is the move.
